Valentine's Day Flowers

It is the most romantic day of the year and as expected you receive a gorgeous bouquet of flowers from your beau. You want the magic of the evening to last forever so naturally your thoughts turn to keeping your valentines flowers alive and beautiful for as long as you possibly can. Here are a few tips to help extend the life of your flowers past valentine's day.
When you receive the flowers for valentine's day, first lavish praise all over the giver to show your appreciation for the beautiful gesture. Next, take the flowers out of their packaging and carefully cut the ends of the stems at an angle about three cm high. After a few days, you will need to cut the stems again, this time at two cm high.
Make sure the vase you use is clean. This will ensure that no bacteria are hiding in the vase which can destroy your flowers. Always use clean water and trim off any leaves that may become submerged under the water. Left in water, those leaves will rot causing the growth of bacteria that will make your flowers wilt and die sooner than need be.
Water is very important to the health of your flowers. To maximize the lifespan of your flowers after valentine's day, be sure to add water to the vase everyday and change the water whenever it gets cloudy or murky. You can add a few drops of bleach to the water to prevent the growth of bacteria and algae which is harmful to your flowers.
Keep your flowers away from heat sources including heaters, computers, televisions, and appliances that give off heat--like ovens. Heat will cause the flowers to lose water quickly which will make them wilt at a faster rate. To make sure your flowers from valentine's day last a long time, keep them in a cool area.
Your flowers do get hungry, so be sure to feed them the plant food provided to you by the florist. Add it to the water when you first put the flowers in them. Flowers will "eat" up to half of the food they need to survive over their lifetime that first day.
It is best to get valentines flowers at valentine's day that are still in the bud stage. You will enjoy watching the buds open, and flowers picked in this stage last longer. So if your beau did not give you flowers in the bud stage this time, make a gentle suggestion for next time. Avoid putting your flowers near fruit. Fruit gives off ethylene gas as it ripens which will make your flowers wilt at a faster rate.
The best way to ensure flowers live long after valentine's day is to take good care of them. It will be well worth the effort, however, when you are able to enjoy the beauty of your special night with your sweetheart for weeks to come

7 Tips On Giving Chocolates To Your Valentine

Author:
Will konijn

Every year millions of people exchange chocolates on february 14th for valentine's day. This trend has grown very popular in recent times, especially with the rise of quality chocolates (...and the number of chocoholics). Still, even in these modern times there are a few things you need to consider before you run out and grab a valentine chocolate gift.

Fresh chocolates are the best to get
Some of the larger chocolate candy makers make their chocolates for the "busy season" (december through february) as early as summer time. That means that some of the packaged chocolates you can purchase are several months old. Also, some of these chocolates are made with added preservatives which allow the chocolates to stay good longer, but can affect the taste. To get around this it is recommended you buy from a local chocolatier, candy store, or bakery who can produce a fresh chocolate treat for you (or at least one that is only a day or two old). If you are sending your chocolates to someone far away, check to see if there is a good local place that could deliver fresh chocolates for you and lessen the chance of shipping mishaps.

Nothing beats a homemade gift
For a more personal touch you can make your own box of valentine chocolate to give to your valentine. Don't worry if you are not a whiz in the kitchen - even if your gift does not turn out perfectly, it will earn extra points because you made it especially for them. There are many books, magazines, and websites to turn to for help and guidance so you do not have to go it alone. This is also a chance for you to personalize the chocolates an make them extra special by adding your valentine's favorite fruits, nuts, liqueurs, flavors, etc. See the chocolate truffle recipe below for a good way to make your own homemade gift.

Timing is everything
It is important to give the right amount of time towards your chocolate gift. If you are buying the chocolates you need to get your order in early to help avoid the last-minute rush. Some places have a cut-off date that they will take valentine orders, especially if shipping or local delivery is involved. If you are making the chocolates you might want to try a practice run to work out any kinks that might come up and to help you get familiar with the recipe. The odds are good that you will do even better the next time you go through the recipe and you can make any adjustments you think would taste good to your valentine. Make sure you can get the ingredients you need from the store since the holiday rush can often deplete the local supply of chocolate, sugar, and other handy ingredients. If you purchase the chocolate early, store it in a cool, dry, dark place, not the refrigerator.

So much chocolate, so little time
There are a wide variety of chocolate gifts you can give: chocolate truffles, bonbons (chocolate shell with a creamy center), cake, brownies, fudge, cookies (chocolate, chocolate chip, chocolate dipped, etc.), chocolate dipped fruit/nuts/pretzels/whatever, and many others that you can purchase or make, so let your imagination run wild

Valentine flowers

The petals of these romantic valentines flowers are overlapping paper hearts, inscribed with words or single letters that spell out a message. If you make them with wire stems, the valentines can be displayed in a vase; with ribbon stems, they can be tucked into envelopes.

Tools and materials
colored paper
24-gauge wire
small beads
ribbon
floral tape or glue
scissors

Valentine flowers how-to

1. Cut out five to eight hearts of the same size, and inscribe them. Use a pushpin to make a hole near the pointed end of each heart.
2. For a wire stem, thread a small bead onto a piece of 24-gauge wire cut a little longer than you want the stem to be; twist the wire so the bead stays at the end. Thread hearts on the other end until all the hearts are stacked against the bead. Twist the wire again to keep the hearts in place. Cover the stem with floral tape, or glue ribbon around the wire.
3. For a ribbon stem, thread a bead to the center of a 3-inch length of wire, and bend the wire in half. Send the ends through the hole in each heart of valentines flowers. On the back, form the two ends into a small loop around the midpoint of a length of ribbon; trim the excess wire.

How To Make Chocolate Dipped Strawberries

By : jane lake

This surprisingly simple recipe to make chocolate dipped strawberries has some expert tips to help you achieve the best possible results.
Once the strawberries are coated with chocolate, you can decorate them with valentine sprinkles or, once the first layer of chocolate is dry, you can drizzle the strawberries with a contrasting chocolate color.
However you serve them, valentine chocolate dipped strawberries are a perfect offering for any valentine.
Chocolate dipped strawberries recipe

Ingredients:
1 pint of perfectly ripened strawberries with stems and leaves intact
About 4 ounces of chocolate chips - dark, white, milk or even chocolate mint flavors
Microwavable bowl and microwave
Cookie sheet covered in wax paper
Optional: valentine sprinkles, small candies, contrasting color of melted chocolateChoc-berries3 (7k)

Cover a cookie sheet with wax paper and set aside.
Wash strawberries and pat dry, leaving stems and leaves intact. Strawberries should be completely dry before proceeding with the recipe.
Melt valentine chocolate chips in a microwavable bowl, using the defrost setting (or 10% power). Heat for 90 seconds, then stir; repeat until the chocolate has just melted and can be stirred smoothly. (chocolate goes from melted to burned very quickly, so monitor the procedure and remove the chocolate from the microwave as soon as melting is complete.)
Hold a strawberry by the stem and leaves and dip it into the melted chocolate. Withdraw the strawberry and swirl it in a tight circle to spin off excess chocolate. If desired, shake sprinkles or small candies over the wet chocolate coating.
Place the chocolate dipped strawberry on the wax paper and set aside to dry. A cool room temperature is preferable for drying. Repeat with the remainder of the strawberries, reheating chocolate for a short time, if necessary, to keep the coating consistency.
If possible, dip and serve the strawberries on the same day. Once dry, you can place each strawberry in a small paper candy cup.

A Single Red Rose is More Than it Seems

The tradition of lovers passing a single red rose began in Roman times as it was a symbol of the goddess Venus the goddess of love. The beauty and perfection of the rose was believed to be the creation of Venus to express her love. The myth has withstood the test of time because even today this simple gesture carries significant emotional sentiments.

The idea of the single red rose symbolizing love has spurned the idea that other single roses also have meaning behind them as well. A single yellow rose is used to express joy, a single peach colored rose is used to express friendship but no other rose has the power of a single solitary red colored rose.

A single red rose is only matched by the dozen red roses that are sent to valentines on Valentine's Day. It is usually accompanied by a big box of chocolates to win someone's heart on Valentine's day. Its perfect beauty is so full of promise, typically one is given while it is still in the bud stage just waiting to burst open, this is the most beautiful stage of a rose.

Brides usually carry bouquets of flowers; sometimes those bouquets are made of several different types of flowers with a solitary rose in the center of the bouquet. It is traditional for a bride to carry a bouquet of roses to the altar, but the drama of having a bouquet with one budding rose in the center and other flowers of a lighter color surrounding it is visually rewarding.

Grooms typically wear buttoners in their button holes of their tuxedos. Usually if there are roses in the brides bouquet that the groom and grooms men will wear one in their lapels. It is very dramatic and sophisticated looking against the lapel of a tuxedo.

A single red rose has symbolized love throughout the centuries, and has been used in fairytales to enhance the story. Beauty and the Beast, a well known children's story and recently an animated movie features one as an important part of plot. The receiver of a one of these roses is one lucky person and should relish in the beauty and the love it symbolizes.

There are endless ways for you to express how you feel about someone, but one of the most effective ways to do so is the passing of a single red rose to the one you care about.

Why Chocolate For Valentine's Day ?

Valentine’s day is many things to different people- a chance to start new relationships, rekindle old ones, or remind that special someone how wonderful they really are. Others feel it is just another “hallmark” holiday where they are expected to do something for unknown reasons. Regardless of your hopes, expectations, or reservations about valentine’s day, chocolate has long been a favorite gift for lovers.

Since the days of the aztecs chocolate has been used as a valentine chocolate gift. Today a box of luxurious quality chocolate says a thousand “thank you’s”, “good luck”, or “i love you”. Chocolate can be given as a way of saying “congratulations”, “i am sorry” or “get well soon”. On valentine’s day chocolate clearly says “i love you!” Chocolate is more than food, it not only fills your belly but also makes you feel soooo good. Elaine sherman wrote “chocolate is heavenly, mellow, sensual, deep, dark, sumptuous, gratifying, potent, dense, creamy, seductive, suggestive, rich, excessive, silky, smooth, luxurious, celestial. Chocolate is downfall, happiness, pleasure, love, ecstasy, fantasy … chocolate makes us wicked, guilty, sinful, healthy, chic, happy.” What more could you want to say to your lover on valentines day? Even the scientific name for the tree from which chocolate is derived, theobroma cacao, translated from greek, means “food of the gods”.
Why does chocolate evoke so many feelings and emotions for us? Valentine chocolate has long been associated with passion, romance and love. This association may go all the way back to the aztecs. They believed chocolate was a source of spiritual wisdom, incredible energy and elevated sexual power. Chocolate was widely used as a nuptial aid and was widely served at wedding ceremonies. The aztecs did not know chocolate as we do today; they consumed the cocoa as a drink. Reports indicate that the emperor montezuma consumed large quantities of the drink every day and always fortified himself with a cup before entertaining his harem. The explorer cortes reported to carlos i of spain that chocolate is “… the divine drink which builds up resistance and fights fatigue. A cup of this precious drink enables a man to walk for a whole day without food.” From the earliest times, chocolate was considered a substance of power and a source of vitality
Chocolate has been a subject of study since the first shipment from veracruz arrived in spain in 1585. But modern science has made some interesting findings that may help explain our lust for quality chocolate. Chocolate contains organic substances known as alkaloids. The most important of these substances is theobromine, which works as a stimulant to the kidneys.

Deciding on the Ideal Valentine Day's Gift

February 14th is referred to as 'Valentine's day' and set apart in many parts of the world as the day for 'celebrating love.' In addition to lovers trying to get to spend some quality time together on that day, it is also a day on which gifts are wildly exchanged. Indeed, for some people in romantic relationships, the way to know whether their significant others really care about them is by looking whether those significant others have sent them any gifts for that day. It is therefore not unheard of people who are madly in love starting to shop for valentine's day gifts as early as in the December of the preceding year!

Yet deciding on the ideal Valentine day's gift is not always very easy.

Deciding on the ideal Valentine day's gift becomes a tricky affair when you take into consideration the fact that these are not supposed to be silent gifts, or neutral gifts as it were; but rather highly 'communicative gifts,' from which a lot is to be inferred. In giving the gifts, the gift-giver wants to communicate a certain message to their beloved. And upon receiving the gift, the recipient is sure to infer certain messages - not necessarily those intended by the gift-giver.

Granted, the gift-giver can attach a written or spoken message to the gift, when giving it, in a bid to influence what the recipient infers from it. And provided this message is well presented, it is sure to influence what the recipient consciously infers from the gift. But what such a message doesn't do is influence the subconscious inference made out of the gift; for such a subconscious inference is typically only made out of the gift itself, rather than the written or spoken messages that come with it. Now as it turns out, it is this subconscious inference, made out of the choice of a gift, which matters more than the conscious inference; made out of the written or spoken message that comes attached to the gift.

In the final analysis, then, the key to deciding on the ideal Valentine's Day gift lies in thinking carefully about what is that you want to communicate through the gift. What you want to communicate through the gift will in turn tend to be influenced by the stage at which your relationship is. The latter assertion is because while gifts carrying 'wooing messages' may be ideal in the earlier stages of the relationship, gifts carrying 'commitment messages' would be more ideal in the later stages of the relationship.

In terms of actual gift items, one has a choice between going for sentimental items and going for practical items (which the recipient can use on a day to day basis). The decision as to whether to go for the former or the later is in turn influenced by what you know about the intended recipient: whether they would be more likely to be 'wowed' by a sentimental gift item or by a more practical gift item.
