Lunorium Natans, the Aquatic Plant

Floating water plantain (Luronium natans) is an aquatic plant belonging to the water plantain family (Alismataceae).

It is on the Dutch Red List of plants as relatively rare and largely decreased, the status is rare in Flanders. Also, the plant is legally protected and that the EU Habitats Directive. Picking, transplanting, deface, marketing or transportation is prohibited (in dried state).

Floating water plantain is native to Europe, from southern France to northern England and southern Sweden and east to northern Germany and Poland.

It is a 10-90 cm high plant with partly submerged and partly floating leaves of some inches. Stemmed floating leaves are oval to elliptical and linear and submerged leaves sessile. The plant thrives in the Netherlands from May to August.

Ternate The flowers are white with a yellow center and 2 cm in diameter. The flowers may float on the water or a few inches above the water. The dopvruchtjes left with 6 to 9 on a head that ripens under water. The ribbed fruits are elongated and round and have a spine point.

Habitat: aquatic vegetation in nutrient-rich foods to moderate, weak or stagnant water.
