History of Gerberas


Before 1737, the gerbera as African / Ethiopia Aster is known, in 1737 it was first described by the Dutchmen Jan Frederik Gronovius, and honor the physician and botanist Traugott Gerber (* 1710 in Zodel; † 1743 in Vyborg) with the name "Gerbera" provided. A year later, his friend Carl von LinnĂ© the way into his system.

1884 was Robert James, a vegetable trader from Durban in South Africa, the way to the goldfields of Barberton in the Transvaal. He gave the "Barberton Daisy", the Barberton daisy, the Botanic Gardens in Durban, whose leader immediately recognized her as the Gerbera. 1886 a first herbarium specimen arrived in the royal garden at Kew, near London. 1889, the first Gerbera were registered, described and presented to the public. This first scientific description is from JD Hooker in Curtis Botanical Magazine. It describes the South African "Barberton Daisy (Gerbera jamesonii today).

1890 first began breeding experiments by Irwin Lynch at the Botanical Garden of Cambridge. 1893 Gerbera came to Germany.

The Gerbera is one of the world's most popular cut flowers. There are about 45 species with various hybrids. Lately, we offer some varieties as houseplants.
