The Sheath Yellow Star

The sheath yellow star (Gagea spathacea) is a bulbous plant belonging to the lily family (Liliaceae). It is a plant of fairly moist and moderately rich soil in deciduous forests and scrub between. The plant is native to the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. In the Netherlands, the plant in the east of the country. The species is on the Dutch Red List of plants as very rare and stable or increased.

It is assumed that the sheath yellow star and is a hybrid born from the crossing of the species in the pasture bosgeelster yellow star: Gagea lutea × pratensis.

The plant is 10-25 cm high and has two pear-shaped bulbs that are enclosed by a common skin. There are also often brood balls available.

The two, 1.5 mm wide, ground-self, linear leaves are tubular and filled with colorless marrow. The cover is a sheath at the stem, hence the name sheath yellow star.

The sheath yellow star flowers in April and May, with usually one to three (rarely five), yellow flowers. The petals have a blunt or contracted summit. The flower petals are bare and steal. Inflorescence a screen appearance.

Was the fruit a capsule. Usually there are no seeds are formed. The seed has a roll of ants and is then dispersed by ants.
