The Spreading Hedge Parsley

By Field Seed (Torilis arvensis) is an annual plant, which belongs to the floral display family (Apiaceae). The species is on the Dutch Red List of plants as very rare and greatly reduced. The plant is native to the Mediterranean and from there spread to Europe.


The plant is 30-90 cm high, has a hairy, ribbed stem and is widespread. The leaves are bipinnate with single to lanceolate, veerspletige leaflets.


By Field Seed blooms in July and August with white or reddish flowers in compound screens are three to five smaller screens. The flowers have five petals. There is no or only a omwindselblad.


The cylindrical fruit is a 3-6 mm long split fruit. At the tip of the fruits are part spines with barbs, which attaches itself to the fruit animal fur or feathers of birds.


The plant is found on calcareous soil in corn fields and on levees.
